Messi the ‘Wilt Chamberlain’ of football

After Lionel Messi surpassed 400 career goals on Saturday evening, Barcelona coach Luis Enrique has likened the Argentine to NBA legend Wilt Chamberlain.

"If Cristiano Ronaldo is like Michael Jordan, then Messi is like Wilt Chamberlain, who scored 100 points in one game," the Barca coach said at a press conference.

"I considered taking Messi off to rest him, but watching him in action is such a big joy that I preferred to have him on the pitch for 90 minutes.

"He is very generous with his assists and it really is a joy to watch him. He has been touched by the magic wand.

"Messi scoring 400 goals? Most of us didn't even score that many goals if we counted all those at school, on the streets, wherever..."

Man Utd plot Ronaldo escape plan

Next summer's major transfer saga may already have begun in earnest, with reports emerging this week that Cristiano Ronaldo is keen on a return to Manchester United.

The Red Devils are thought to reciprocate those feelings and could plot a move for the Portuguese, who has become dismayed at the Bernabeu by the decision to sell Angel Di Maria and Xabi Alonso.

Louis van Gaal hinted that he would jump at the chance to sign Ronaldo, just as he did when Radamel Falcao become available, but suspects Madrid will do everything possible to retain the Ballon d'Or winner.

“It’s always a discussion in the papers. I don’t think the media shall buy Ronaldo,” said the Dutch boss on Friday.

“When it is possible, it is what I have always said with Falcao, players like Ronaldo give a lot extra to selection, to the team, but I don't think Real Madrid shall sell him.”

Real Madrid's midfield overhaul continues

Real Madrid’s revolving midfield door continued on Friday as Xabi Alonso completed his move to Bayern Munich

Angel Di Maria departed in a £59.7 million deal for Manchester United earlier this week as Madrid president Florentino Perez continues to tinker with the engine room which guided the club to the Champions League trophy in May.

Casillas still the man at Madrid

Iker Casillas was provided with something of a vote of confidence following Real Madrid's decision to offload Diego Lopez to AC Milan.

The Spain No.1, who lost his place to Lopez for the majority of the 2013-14 campaign, is seemingly still in favor at the Bernabeu despite his struggles with his national team at the World Cup.

The signing of Keylor Navas has further pushed Lopez out the door, with the 32-year-old furious at the way he has been treated by the Champions League winners, while Casillas now looks certain to finish his career in Madrid.

James becomes latest Madrid Galactico

Barely two weeks ago James Rodriguez left the pitch in Fortaleza in tears after Colombia were knocked out of the World Cup by hosts Brazil, but he was in rather better spirits on Tuesday as he was unveiled as Real Madrid's latest Galactico at the Santiago Bernabeu.

The 23-year-old was the top scorer at this summer's tournament, striking his sixth and final goal from the penalty spot against the Selecao - and, in the process, famously picked up a new friend in the shape of an enormous grasshopper.

And now James, sans giant insect, has become the fourth most expensive player in history after sealing a £63 million move to the Spanish capital, where he can look forward to playing alongside two of the three players who have cost more than him, Cristiano Ronaldo and Gareth Bale, as well as fellow summer recruit Toni Kroos.

Mourinho & Wenger serenade in-demand Khedira

After initially looking like leading the race for Sami Khedira, Arsenal have fallen behind Chelsea in the race to sign the Real Madrid man.

Reports suggested high wage demands put off the Gunners but Arsene Wenger will hope he can still attract the World Cup winner to the Emirates Stadium.

You might be thinking: Chelsea surely don't need another midfielder but you'd be wrong, of course. Here's why he'd make the perfect fit for Jose Mourinho's team and why Wenger may actually get fortunate if Arsenal don't land the 27-year-old.

Real Madrid claim La Decima

Real Madrid finally claimed La Decima with a 4-1 win over Atletico Madrid in Lisbon.

Diego Simeone’s men came within a whisker of denying their city rivals Champions League glory with Real needing a 93rd minute header from Sergio Ramos to take the game into extra-time.

Los Blancos then ran away with the game in the second period with Gareth Bale, Marcelo and Cristiano Ronaldo sealing a 4-1 victory and a 10th European Cup.
