Balotelli breaks the shackles with timely Liverpool goal

Mario Balotelli got the monkey - and maybe the pig - off his back with a late goal for Liverpool against Swansea on Tuesday night.

The walls had been closing in on the Italy striker in recent weeks, but perhaps he has broken the shackles and can now focus on hitting the net of the net in the Premier League.

Manchester United hammered on night of Di Maria arrival

Tuesday evening started on a high note for Manchester United after they confirmed the signing of Angel Di Maria from Real Madrid.

Suarez 'champing at the bit' to make Liverpool return

Liverpool striker Luis Suarez is set to return from his 10-match suspension to face Manchester United in the Capital One Cup on Wednesday evening.

The Uruguay international has missed the opening of Liverpool's campaign after he was suspended for biting Chelsea's Branislav Ivanovic but Brendan Rodgers insists the striker is "champing at the bit" to return to action.

“You’ll find out that once he gets that strip on, he’ll work his socks off. He’s received nothing but affection and love from the supporters," Rodgers told reporters.

“They deserve no less than 100 per cent and, knowing Luis, that’s what he’ll give them. He’s really champing at the bit to help the team. I am sure once he gets back on the field he will show his top quality.”

Chelsea boo-boys call for Torres to get the chop

Chelsea's Capital One Cup defeat to Swansea brought misery for the fans and also for striker Fernando Torres, who once again failed to score before being substituted.

The Spain international has endured a terrible time in west London since his £50 million move from Liverpool, and was jeered on Wednesday night at Stamford Bridge by his own fans.

To make matters worse, the supporters also called for new signing Demba Ba, who looked a real threat in his brief cameo and could be set to ensure Torres gets the chop from Chelsea's team.

Wenger on thin ice after Arsenal defeat to Bradford

Ahead of Arsenal's trip to Bradford City in the Capital One Cup, the oft-derided tournament was starting look like the Gunners' best chance of ending their long wait for a trophy.

Indeed on paper, Arsene Wenger's side looked to have the pick of the ties having being drawn to face the League Two side in the quarter-finals of the competition.

The Frenchman even picked a strong team for the match, yet that did not matter to Bradford. The League Two side almost won the game in 90 minutes, before Thomas Vermaelen popped up with a late equaliser to take the game to extra-time

However, Bradford were not to be denied and took the Gunners all the way to penalties before beating them in the shoot-out to dump them out of the competition and leave under-pressure Wenger on thin ice at Arsenal.

Adam and Liverpool reach for the sky

Despite Charlie Adam and Steven Gerrard's best efforts, Liverpool finally ended six years of hurt on Sunday as Kenny Dalglish's side lifted the League Cup with a 3-2 penalty shoot-out win over Cardiff City. A goal from Martin Skrtel in normal time and another from Dirk Kuyt in extra time earned the Reds the chance to contest the shoot-out, and luckily for Adam, Gerrard and Co. Cardiff's penalties were even shoddier
