Teen Wolf Inspires Wolfsburg's Shock Win Over Real Madrid

It was the night of the Wolf in Germany as Real Madrid slipped to a surprise defeat to Wolfsburg in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final...

2016, one of the most unexpected moments in UEFA Champions League history happened—Wolfsburg defeated Real Madrid 2-0 in the first leg of the quarter-finals. As a cartoonist, I couldn't resist turning this surprise into something fun and familiar.

Inspired by the classic 80s movie Teen Wolf, starring Michael J. Fox, and here Ricardo Rodriguez as the Werewolf. I imagined the Wolfsburg player transforming into hilarious versions of “teen wolf” who overwhelmed a tired and confused Cristiano Ronaldo. In my cartoon, you’ll see Max Kruse in a basketball jersey and a Nutella-loving player—capturing the absurdity and surprise of that night in Germany.

This was one of those games where the underdogs howled loud and made football history. Even though Real Madrid would come back in the second leg and advance, that night belonged to Wolfsburg—and the wolves.

Marathon

Pheidippides running

The name Marathon comes from the legend of Pheidippides, a Greek messenger. The legend states that he was sent from the battlefield of Marathon to Athens to announce that the Persians had been defeated in the Battle of Marathon (in which he had just fought), in August or September, 490 BC. It is said that he ran the entire distance without stopping and burst into the assembly, exclaiming "we have wοn", before collapsing and dying
