Is the NBA Logo Based on Jerry West? The Story Behind the Famous Basketball Silhouette

The iconic logo of the NBA is one of the most recognizable sports symbols in the world.
For decades, fans have believed that the silhouette used in the logo was inspired by basketball legend Jerry West.

But is that actually true?

The Origin of the NBA Logo

Jerry West and the famous silhouette believed to inspire the NBA logo.

The NBA logo was created in 1969 by designer Alan Siegel.
It was inspired by a photograph of Jerry West dribbling the ball during his playing days with the Los Angeles Lakers.

Although the league has never officially confirmed that the logo represents Jerry West, the resemblance between the silhouette and the photograph is striking.

Why the NBA Never Officially Confirmed It

Interestingly, the NBA has always avoided officially stating that the logo represents Jerry West.

One reason is legal: if the league officially acknowledged the player behind the logo, it could lead to royalty or compensation issues.

Still, many basketball fans and historians widely believe that Jerry West is indeed the inspiration behind the famous silhouette.

The Debate: Should the Logo Change?

In recent years, some fans have suggested updating the NBA logo.
After the tragic death of Kobe Bryant in 2020, many people called for the logo to be redesigned in his honor.

However, the NBA has not announced any plans to change its iconic symbol.

Do you think the NBA logo should stay the same or be redesigned for another legend like Kobe Bryant?
