Peter Rufai – The Legend Who Chose the Ball Over the Crown
king, but chose to be a guardian.
Peter Rufai wasn’t just a goalkeeper — he was a symbol of pride, bravery, and identity for Nigeria and all of Africa.
Born in 1963 to a royal family in Nigeria, Rufai turned down his right to the throne to pursue a career between the posts.
He represented Nigeria in the 1994 and 1998 World Cups, and played a key role in winning the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations.
Incredibly, he even scored a goal in a 1993 qualifier — a rare feat for a goalkeeper.
His club career spanned across Belgium, the Netherlands, Portugal, and Spain.
After retiring, he dedicated his life to coaching young goalkeepers, founding an academy and passing down the passion that defined his journey.
🎨 In this tribute artwork, I imagined a powerful moment:
The crown drifting away, while Rufai stretches to catch a glowing ball — his destiny.
Because for him, football meant more than a throne.

Running scared: Tahiti & Nigeria get ready for Spain test
Far from being bullish about their chances, both sides could be forgiven for packing up and heading home early ahead of their respective fixtures against the might of Spain - world and European champions no less.
Vicente del Bosque's powerhouse kicked off their campaign in Brazil with a 2-1 win over Uruguay and will expect to take maximum points from their final two group games.

Football's biggest names land in Brazil ahead of Confederations Cup
The hosts kick off proceedings on Saturday evening against Japan, with the likes of Oscar, David Luiz, Hulk and Neymar all expected to be in action.
And if that game alone does not boast enough big names, Spain have a star cast including Juan Mata, Fernando Torres and Andres Iniesta, Italy have Mario Balotelli and Andrea Pirlo, and Uruguay boast Edinson Cavani and, of course, Liverpool striker Luis Suarez.

Rashidi Yekini's hearty celebration
The man who almost single-handedly qualified the Super Eagles for their maiden World Cup in 1994 had died in ignominy, away from the klieg lights that heralded his playing days. The 1993 African footballer of the year led the Super Eagles to win the 1994 Africa Cup of Nations in Tunisia where he scored five goals.
Perhaps the most memorable of all his record 37 international goals is that which he scored in Nigeria's first game at the World Cup, USA '94. It was a just reward that Yekini would score the country's first ever goal on the biggest stage of all and he celebrated by running into the goals, grabbed the net and screamed into the Dallas air.
The powerful man was all heart...
