Brazil's Scare, Germany's 7-1 & Qatar's Heroes: The Stories That Defined World Cup Matchday 1

The opening round of the 2026 FIFA World Cup delivered far more than goals and results. It introduced new heroes, revived old memories, and reminded us why the World Cup remains football's greatest stage.

Germany Sends a Powerful Message

Germany produced the statement performance of the tournament so far, defeating Curacao 7-1. Beyond the scoreline, it immediately brought back memories of Germany's unforgettable 7-1 victory over Brazil in the 2014 World Cup semifinal. Whether intentional or not, seeing another German 7-1 score instantly sparked nostalgia among football fans worldwide.

Morocco's Young Star Shines Against Brazil

Brazil entered the tournament as one of the favorites, but Morocco proved they fear no one. One of the biggest stories was the outstanding performance of young midfielder Ayoub Bouaddi, who looked completely at home against one of football's biggest nations. His display showed why so many people consider him one of Morocco's brightest talents.

Qatar Finds Its Heroes

Qatar looked destined for defeat after falling behind against Switzerland, but football often rewards resilience. Goalkeeper Mahmoud Abu Al Nada recovered from an early mistake with several important saves, while veteran defender Boualem Khoukhi became the hero by scoring a dramatic late equalizer. Their comeback earned Qatar a historic World Cup point and created one of the most emotional moments of the opening round.

A Touch of Respect in Sweden vs Tunisia

One of the most touching moments came when a Swedish player of Tunisian heritage scored against Tunisia but chose not to celebrate. In a tournament filled with emotion, this simple gesture reminded everyone that football is also about identity, respect, and family roots.

Scotland Quietly Takes Control

While much of the attention focused on Brazil, Germany, Morocco, and Qatar, Scotland quietly did its job. A disciplined victory over Haiti placed the Scots at the top of their group, proving once again that World Cups are not won by headlines alone.

The Perfect Start to an Unpredictable Tournament

If Matchday 1 taught us anything, it is that this World Cup is already full of surprises. Germany announced itself as a powerhouse, Morocco continued to impress on the biggest stage, Qatar created unforgettable memories, and new heroes emerged from unexpected places.

And if this was only the beginning, the rest of the tournament promises to be even more unforgettable.

Omar Momani Represents Jordan in the Sports Illustrated World Cup Cover Project

I’m proud to represent Jordan in the Sports Illustrated World Cup Cover Project, a global collaboration that brought together artists from around the world to create unique covers celebrating football and culture.

Sports Illustrated World Cup cover illustration by Omar Momani featuring Petra, Nabataeans carving stone, Jordanian football culture, and the dream of reaching the FIFA World Cup.

For the Jordan cover, I wanted to connect the country’s ancient history with its modern football dream.

The main idea behind the illustration is that the current generation of Jordanian footballers are carving the FIFA World Cup trophy from stone, just as their Nabataean ancestors once carved Petra into the mountains centuries ago.

In the background, Petra represents Jordan’s deep cultural roots and one of the greatest achievements in the country’s history. In the foreground, the players continue that same spirit of determination, creativity, and ambition — but this time through football and the dream of reaching the World Cup.

Around the scene are small details inspired by everyday Jordanian life, including families, fans, traditional clothing, children playing, and moments of celebration, all reflecting the strong connection between football and national identity in Jordan.

I wanted the illustration to feel both epic and human at the same time, mixing historical symbolism with the energy and passion of football in my own cartoon style.

It was an honor to contribute to such an iconic global project and to represent Jordan alongside artists from all over the world.

The Death of Italian Football

For decades, Italian football was untouchable.

Four World Cups. Legendary defenders. Tactical brilliance.
From Paolo Maldini to Gianluigi Buffon, Italy wasn’t just winning… it was defining football itself.

But today?

Italy struggles.
Italy misses World Cups.
Italy feels… broken.

So what really happened?

The death of Italian football

 From Glory to Collapse

Italy’s golden era wasn’t just about trophies — it was about identity.

  • Defensive mastery
  • Tactical intelligence
  • World-class academies

Winning the 2006 World Cup should have been the beginning of a new era.

Instead… it became the end of one.

Calciopoli: The Turning Point

In 2006, Italian football was hit by one of the biggest scandals in sports history: Calciopoli scandal.

Clubs were punished.
Reputations were destroyed.
Trust disappeared.

And while Italy lifted the World Cup that same year…
the system behind it was already collapsing.

Italian legends crying

A System That Stopped Evolving

While countries like Spain, Germany, and France invested in youth development…

Italy stayed behind.

  • Aging players dominated the league
  • Young talents struggled to break through
  • Tactical innovation slowed down

Football evolved.
Italy didn’t.

The Results We See Today

The consequences are clear:

  • ❌ Missing World Cup 2018
  • ❌ Missing World Cup 2022
  • ⚠️ Inconsistent performances

Even when Italy won Euro 2020… it felt like a moment, not a movement.

Italian football under the grave

Fans Feel It Too

If you read the comments today, the pain is obvious.

Italian fans are not just frustrated…
they feel disconnected.

The passion is still there.
But the belief?

That’s fading.

Is This Really The End?

That’s the big question.

Is this just a bad period…
or the true death of Italian football?

Because history shows:

Great football nations don’t disappear forever.

But they can fall for a long time.

Final Thought

Italian football is not dead.

But it’s no longer what it used to be.

And until something changes — structurally, culturally, and tactically —
the grave might stay open.

Iraq 2–1 Bolivia 🇮🇶 – Aymen Hussein Sends Iraq to the World Cup After 40 Years

Iraq 2-1 Bolivia World Cup qualification Aymen Hussein Ahmed Radhi cartoon

🇮🇶 Iraq is back… after 40 years

Iraq has officially qualified for the World Cup after a 40-year absence.

A historic night… sealed with a 2–1 victory over Bolivia.

⚽ The match that changed everything

It wasn’t just any game.

  • Ali Al-Hamadi (10') opened the scoring
  • Bolivia equalized through Moises Paniagua (38')
  • Then came the moment…

👉 Aymen Hussein (53')

The goal that brought Iraq back to the World Cup.

⏳ From Mexico 1986 to today

The last time Iraq played in the World Cup was in Mexico 1986, led by legendary striker Ahmed Radhi.

For decades, that moment lived only in memories.

Today… it returns to life.

🔥 A goal for a nation

Aymen Hussein didn’t just score a goal.

He connected generations.

From those who watched Ahmed Radhi…
to millions witnessing history today.

🎨 One image… one story

This cartoon captures that exact feeling.

The past watching the present.
The dream continuing… not ending.

❤️ More than football

This qualification is bigger than the game.

It’s about:

  • resilience
  • identity

I Grew Up… He Didn’t: The Story of Guillermo Ochoa and the World Cup

⚽ A Goalkeeper Who Never Leaves

Every four years, football changes.
New stars rise. Legends retire. Teams evolve.

But somehow… one face always returns.

Guillermo Ochoa

From the stands to the biggest stage, from youth to adulthood — fans have grown up watching him.
And yet, he always seems the same.

Football animation growing up watching World Cup Ochoa

🕰️ Growing Up with the World Cup

For many fans, the World Cup is a timeline of their lives.

  • 2006: You were just a kid.
  • 2010: A little older, understanding more.
  • 2014: Fully invested, living every moment.
  • 2018: Watching with a different perspective.
  • 2022: Time feels faster.
  • 2026: You look back… and realize something strange.

Ochoa is still there.

🧤 The Myth of Ochoa

He may not always dominate club football headlines,
but in the World Cup…

he transforms.

His performance in FIFA World Cup 2014 — especially against Brazil — turned him into a global icon.

It’s almost as if he exists in two realities:

  • One for club football
  • One for the World Cup

🎬 Turning the Idea into Animation

This idea inspired a short animated reel:

A child watching the World Cup in 2006…
growing older with each tournament…
while Ochoa never changes.

A simple concept, but one that resonates with millions of football fans around the world.

⏳ Time Moves… Some Things Don’t

Football is constantly evolving.

But sometimes, it gives us something rare:
a sense of continuity.

A familiar face across decades.

And maybe that’s why this story connects —
because it’s not just about Ochoa.

It’s about us.
