Ajax 95: The Young Team That Shocked Europe

AAjax 1995 animated illustration by Omar Momani

In 1995, a young team from Amsterdam did the impossible.

They defeated the strongest team in the world, lifted the Champions League, and changed European football forever.

This was Ajax 1995 — a generation that proved talent, discipline, and vision could overcome even the greatest giants.

🎬 Watch the full animated documentary below:

🧠 The Philosophy Behind Ajax 95

Behind this project stood Louis van Gaal — often described as the “Iron Tulip.”

While influenced by Johan Cruyff, Van Gaal believed in structure over freedom.

Every player had a role.
Every movement was part of a system.

And that system created one of the most disciplined young teams in football history.

🌍 A Generation of Future Legends

Ajax 95 was built on youth — but not just any youth.

The team included players who would go on to become global icons:

  • Clarence Seedorf

  • Edgar Davids

  • Patrick Kluivert

  • Edwin van der Sar

  • Jari Litmanen

Many of them came from Surinamese roots — reflecting the multicultural identity of Amsterdam.

Ajax even finished the Dutch league unbeaten.

This was no coincidence.
This was a machine.

🏆 The Night That Changed Everything

In the Champions League final, Ajax faced AC Milan — the most powerful team in the world.

With legends like Franco Baresi and Paolo Maldini, Milan were expected to win.

But in the 85th minute…

Frank Rijkaard played the pass.

Patrick Kluivert finished it.

Ajax were champions of Europe.

⚖️ The Bosman Ruling and the Breakup

In 1995, the Bosman ruling changed football forever.

Players could now move freely across Europe.

For Ajax, it meant one thing:

They could no longer keep their stars.

🌍 Where Did the Players Go?

The Ajax generation spread across Europe:

  • Edgar Davids → Juventus legend

  • Clarence Seedorf → Champions League winner with 3 clubs

  • Marc Overmars → Arsenal & Barcelona

  • Nwankwo Kanu → Arsenal Invincibles

  • Jari Litmanen → Finland’s greatest icon

Meanwhile, Louis van Gaal recreated part of the project at Barcelona — what fans jokingly called “Dutchlona.”

🧭 Legacy of Ajax 95

Ajax 95 was not just a team.

It was a generation that changed football.

From Amsterdam to Turin, London, Madrid, and Barcelona — their influence was everywhere.

❓ Final Question

In a modern game dominated by money…

Can a team like Ajax 95 ever exist again?

The Greatest Football Rivalries of All Time

Football has always been more than just a game. It’s about passion, glory, heartbreak — and of course, rivalries that keep fans debating for decades. Some rivalries are about clubs, but the most iconic ones are between players and coaches. Here are some of the greatest football rivalries of all time:

🐐 Messi vs Ronaldo

Perhaps the most famous rivalry in football history.
For more than 15 years, Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo dominated the game, exchanging Ballon d’Or titles, Champions League goals, and endless debates. Fans are still divided: Who is the real GOAT?

👑 Maradona vs Pelé

Before Messi and Ronaldo, the debate was always about Diego Maradona and Pelé.
Pelé, the "King of Football," lifted three World Cups. Maradona, the genius with the “Hand of God,” led Argentina to glory in 1986. Their rivalry defined the 20th century of football.

🔴🔵 Gerrard vs Lampard

In England, nothing sparks more arguments than Steven Gerrard vs Frank Lampard.
Gerrard, the heart and soul of Liverpool, versus Lampard, Chelsea’s goal-scoring machine from midfield. Who was better? The debate is endless.

🛡️ Maldini vs Ramos

Defensive greatness across two eras.
Paolo Maldini, the elegant Milan legend, known for discipline and leadership. Sergio Ramos, Real Madrid’s warrior, famous for last-minute goals and red cards. Two different styles, both unforgettable.

🧤 Buffon vs Casillas

The ultimate goalkeeper rivalry.
Gianluigi Buffon, Italy’s timeless captain, against Iker Casillas, Spain’s “San Iker.” Both lifted World Cups, Champions Leagues, and countless trophies. Fans still argue: who was the better shot-stopper?

🤬 Suárez vs Gattuso

The fiery rivalry we didn’t know we needed.
Luis Suárez, infamous for his bites, against Gennaro Gattuso, the Italian midfield warrior with a short fuse. If they ever shared the same pitch, chaos was guaranteed.

🎩 Mourinho vs Guardiola

It’s not just about players — coaches have rivalries too.
José Mourinho and Pep Guardiola clashed in Spain and later in England, with very different philosophies. Pep, the tactical mastermind; Mourinho, the master of mind games. Their rivalry is still alive today.

👑 Bonus: Zlatan vs Zlatan

Because sometimes the only rival you have is yourself.
As Zlatan Ibrahimović once said: “Only Zlatan can defeat Zlatan.”

⚽ Final Whistle

Rivalries define football history. They make matches more exciting and fuel endless debates.

Zlatan: The GOAT of Missing Trophies

When we talk about football legends, we usually mention their glorious achievements—World Cups, Champions Leagues, Ballon d’Ors, and Euros. But sometimes, what makes a story funnier is what’s missing.

Cristiano Ronaldo has no World Cup 🌍.
Benzema has no Euro 🏆.
Ronaldo Nazário never lifted the Champions League ✨.
Maldini, despite being a defensive icon, never won the Ballon d’Or 🥇.

And then… there’s Zlatan Ibrahimović. He missed them all, yet still calls himself a legend 👑😂.

That’s why I made this short cartoon: a quick, funny look at Zlatan being the “GOAT of Missing Trophies.” Sometimes football isn’t just about winning—it’s about the laughs it gives us along the way.

Pirlo’s free kick took me straight back to AC Milan’s golden days… 😢❤️ | My animated tribute

I saw Pirlo score that free kick at 45… and suddenly I was a teenager again, watching him in that iconic red and black shirt.
As a lifelong AC Milan fan, Pirlo was pure magic — the calm in chaos, the maestro of San Siro.

This moment hit me hard, so I did what I do best: I turned it into a cartoon.
A little tribute to one of the greatest midfielders to ever play the game.
Hope it brings back memories for you too. 🖤❤️

👉 Which Pirlo moment still gives you goosebumps?

The Maldini Family: Three Generations of AC Milan Legends

Few families in football history have had the impact of the Maldini family.

Across three generations, the Maldini name has become deeply connected with AC Milan, one of the most historic clubs in European football.

From father to son to grandson, the Maldinis have represented loyalty, leadership and football excellence.

Cesare Maldini

The story began with Cesare Maldini, who played for AC Milan in the 1950s and 1960s.

He captained Milan and helped the club win the 1963 European Cup, becoming one of the earliest icons in the club’s history.

Paolo Maldini

His son Paolo Maldini became one of the greatest defenders in football history.

During his legendary career with AC Milan, Paolo won:

  • 7 Serie A titles

  • 5 Champions League titles

He spent his entire professional career at the club and became a symbol of loyalty in modern football.

Daniel Maldini

The legacy continues with Daniel Maldini, the third generation of the Maldini family to play professional football.

When Daniel made his debut for AC Milan, it marked a rare moment in football history: three generations from the same family playing for the same club.

About the Illustration

This illustration is a cartoon tribute to the Maldini family created by sports cartoonist Omar Momani, celebrating three generations of AC Milan legends.
